And Gartner's prediction? 25% drop in search engine volume by the end of 2026 as users shift to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude for their queries.

The Three Metrics You Should Be Tracking Instead

If you're still measuring success by "organic traffic" and "rankings," you're optimizing for a system that's already obsolete.

Here's what I'm tracking now for our clients (and what you should be tracking too):

1. AI Citation Rate

What it is: How often your brand/content appears in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.

Why it matters: This is your new "ranking." If you're not cited in the AI answer, you don't exist to that user.

How to measure it:

  • Run manual queries for your target topics across AI platforms weekly
  • Track citation frequency and source attribution
  • Use tools like AuthorityTech's visibility audit or llmrefs.com for broader monitoring

Tactical setup (this takes 15 minutes):

  1. Create a spreadsheet with your top 20 keywords
  2. Query each keyword in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini (same wording, same day)
  3. Note: Does your brand appear? Which content gets cited? Position in the answer?
  4. Repeat weekly. Track trends.

2. AI Referral Traffic

  • Monitor competitor citation rates
  • Audit your content for AI-friendly formats (FAQs, structured data, clear sourcing)

What Worked Last Month (Real Example)

One of our clients in the legal tech space was seeing this exact problem: stable rankings, dying traffic.

Here's what we changed:

Before: Blog posts optimized for "personal injury lawyer software" (ranked #3, 800 impressions/month, 15% CTR = 120 clicks).

After: Rebuilt their content ecosystem:

  • Created glossary-style definitions for industry terms
  • Added "According to [Source]" citations (AI models trust cited content more)
  • Used clear H2/H3 structure (AI engines parse headers as topic signals)
  • Updated monthly with fresh stats (AI models favor recent content)

Result: After 6 weeks:

  • Google impressions dropped to 650 (expected—more AI Overviews appeared)
  • BUT: ChatGPT citations increased from 2/month to 14/month
  • Perplexity referral traffic: 47 visits/month (new channel, didn't exist before)
  • Quality of inbound leads improved (fewer tire-kickers, more "I already understand what you do" conversations)

Traffic went down. Revenue went up.

Your traffic doesn't cliff overnight. It bleeds slowly. By the time you notice, you're 6 months behind on building AI-native content.

The right move: Audit your AI visibility THIS WEEK, even if traffic looks fine. You want to be building citation momentum before the rollout hits your keywords.

The Framework I'm Using Now
